Daily Lab Operations

This section outlines the basic, daily expectations, procedures, and best practices for working in research laboratories across WesternU.

🧪 Equipment Use & Scheduling
  • Reserve shared equipment through iLab.
  • Training must be completed before use—check SOPs or contact your lab manager or core staff.
  • Respect posted time limits and clean equipment after use.
  • Report broken equipment to [maintenance contact].
  • Follow SOPs for high-risk or specialty instruments.
📦 Labeling, Storage & Sample Management
  • Label samples with name/initials, date, and contents. Use color tape if available.
  • Use assigned space in fridges and freezers; do not overload shared units.
  • Remove expired samples and report abandoned items.
📦 Supply Ordering & Inventory
  • Common supplies are located in designated areas; ask if unsure.
  • Request specialty items via [procurement contact] or your PI.
  • Keep shared inventory organized and labeled.
  • Notify your lab manager if supplies are low or missing.
🗑 Waste Management
  • Use red bags/bins for biohazard waste; do not overfill.
  • Sharps go in proper containers—replace when 3/4 full.
  • Label chemical waste and store in designated satellite stations.
  • Contact EHS for disposal help.
🧼 Cleaning & Daily Etiquette
  • Clean your bench daily with ethanol or bleach.
  • Follow any posted cleaning assignments or lab rotation schedules.
  • Sign out of shared instruments after use.
  • No food or drink in lab areas.
🧾 Signage, Logs & Required Documents
  • Sign-in/out sheets located near lab entrances or shared equipment.
  • Sample logs required where applicable.
  • Check eye wash logs weekly if assigned.
  • Post SDS, evacuation maps, and safety contacts in a visible location.
🛠 Maintenance & After-Hours Work
  • Report equipment issues via [maintenance form].
  • Do not attempt repairs without authorization.
  • Minor issues: contact your lab manager. Major issues: notify core or vendor rep.
  • Working late? Use the SafeZone app to “Check In” so Campus Security knows you're present. Use “Help” or “Emergency” features if needed.
